Opportunities

I encourage my oboe students to perform outside of band class.  Here are several events and opportunities oboe students have:

  • District Honorband
  • All-State Band
  • Mid-Fest and Jan-Fest
  • Solo/Ensemble Festival
  • Summer Music Camps
    • Want to be in a band with other students on your level?  Did you enjoy District Clinic and make new friends?  See them again at band camps.  Two quality and pretty affordable camps are ENCORE! and the UGA Band Camp.  This is an opportunity to perform alone, in small groups, or in large ensembles.  Private lessons and/or master classes are available.  Apply to these by May every year.
    • More intense summer camps include the Oxford Oboe Camp (GA), the John Mack Oboe Camp (NC), and Interlochen (MI).
  • Marching Band
    •  I know, I know.  Oboe's not in the marching band...but saxophone is!  Oboists can easily switch to sax the summer before high school (I am proficient enough to get you through your show music and any scales you'll need).  Another idea is to be in the pit (hello, pianists!), play a previous instrument you remember, or even be in the color guard.  Just ask your band director...he/she will help you find a way to participate.  Marching band is a great way to meet smart, nice friends before entering a new school.
  • Governor's Honors Program
    • This is a 4-week summer program for talented rising 11th and 12th-grade students.  Each student attends classes in his/her major area (music, art, drama, math, science, language arts, etc.), but also participates in all kinds of learning and leisure activities.  GHP is held on the campus of Valdosta State University, and GHP students have a great time making intelligent friends!
    • Nominations happen at the beginning of the school year (you can ask your teacher to be a nominee) in 10th and 11th grade.  Auditions are held in February.
  • Other Opportunities
    • Church (especially during the Christmas and Easter seasons...you do not have to be a member, and you may even be paid!)
    • Local youth orchestras (Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony, Emory Youth Symphony, Buckhead Youth Orchestra, Ludwig Orchestra, Gainesville Youth Symphony, the Metro-Atlanta Youth Wind Ensemble, and the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra)
    • School/Church/County talent shows
    • Ask your band director if you can perform a solo at a concert (graduating seniors often have this opportunity).
    • Ask your school's chorus director if any pieces need a woodwind soloist.  You could be a guest artist!
