The oboe is a unique instrument in the woodwind family. It uses a double-reed (the English Horn and bassoon are its larger cousins). Orchestras tune to the oboist, and there are many interesting solos written for oboe. Because oboe is so challenging and has such a different sound, there are not many students picked to play it (sometimes only one!).
