Oboe lessons are $25 per 30-minute lesson (taught at my home), and students attend on a weekly basis. Aside from music theory and improving tone, my oboe curriculum is as follows:
| Grade |
Objectives |
| 6th |
use of correct embouchure, intonation, fingerings (low C to high C), one-octave major scales, sight-reading in simple meter, concert music and band book assignments |
| 7th/8th |
fingerings (B-flat to high D), two-octave major scales, Gekeler I method book, sight-reading in compound meter, beginning reed scraping, District/All-State/Solo & Ensemble preparation, preparation for band tests |
| 9th/10th |
fingerings (up to high E), Gekeler II method book, vibrato, reed-making, District/All-State/Solo & Ensemble/GHP preparation, beginner saxophone for marching band |
| 11th/12th |
Tying oboe reed blanks and reed adjusting, College audition repertoire, District/All-State/Solo & Ensemble/GHP preparation |
Beginner oboists may break reeds often, so stick to the cheapest "good" reeds (Emerald) until they start lasting longer. My handmade reeds are $15.
Before starting oboe, please read the information provided on this site. Oboe is challenging, time-consuming and expensive, and only serious students will be able to make progress.
